Exercises to Strengthen Flat Feet

Flat feet, also called pes planus, occur when the arches of the feet remain flat or collapse during standing or movement, which reduces the foot’s ability to adapt to uneven surfaces and absorb shock during walking. Both children and adults commonly have flattened feet, and while some individuals experience no complications from flattened feet, others experience pain or ankle instability that interferes with walking. Targeted exercises may strengthen the foot’s supporting muscles to improve stability.

Flat Feet and Fallen Arches

Flat feet occur when the arch of the foot does not form fully or loses height during weight-bearing activities. Not all cases of flattened feet require treatment or intervention; if you experience pain or trouble walking, you may benefit from exercises to strengthen the foot’s supporting structures.

There are different types of flattened feet, which differ in their causes and presentations. With flexible flat feet, the arch appears when the foot is lifted but flattens while standing, whereas rigid flat feet lack an arch even while a person is seated or resting. The condition can be congenital, causing some people to never form arches, while fallen arches are flattened feet that occur in adulthood, after an arch previously existed.

Treatment decisions depend on symptoms rather than appearance alone. Pain, ankle instability, or altered walking patterns may signal the need for intervention. Some individuals experience discomfort only during prolonged standing or physical activity, while others notice symptoms spreading to the ankles or shins over time.

Exercises and Stability Improvement

Exercises for flattened feet focus on strengthening muscles that stabilize the arch. Rather than changing bone structure, these exercises aim to improve how the foot responds to load. Strengthening the muscles that support the foot and ankle can help reinforce stability.

Arch Lifts and Marble Pickups

Arch lifts activate the muscles that raise and support the midfoot without curling the toes. The movement involves gently drawing the arch upward while keeping the heel and forefoot grounded against the floor. This exercise emphasizes controlled foot positioning and muscle engagement rather than forceful motion. Repeated, controlled movements help reinforce arch strength during standing activities.

Marble pickups strengthen smaller muscles in the foot through repeated toe flexion. Lifting objects from the floor engages the toes and intrinsic foot muscles that contribute to arch support. This exercise builds strength that is used during walking and other weight-bearing movements. Slow, deliberate repetitions help maintain proper technique.

Heel Raises and Walking Variations

Heel raises strengthen the calf muscles and the tendon that supports the arch during push-off while walking. Rising slowly onto the toes emphasizes controlled movement through the ankle and lower leg. This exercise supports stability during walking by improving the strength used during forward motion. Performing heel raises with steady control helps maintain proper alignment.

Heel walking and toe walking challenge balance and coordination by altering how the foot contacts the ground. Walking on the heels places emphasis on lifting the front of the foot, while toe walking places emphasis on lifting the heel. These movements encourage active muscle engagement throughout the foot and lower leg. Short distances allow the movements to remain controlled and consistent.

Learn More About Flat Feet

Exercises may improve muscle strength and coordination, but they do not resolve every cause of flat feet. Persistent pain or changes in walking patterns may require further evaluation. A clinical assessment helps determine whether exercises alone are sufficient or if additional treatment is appropriate.
